Free Advice always generates a response.  On Monday July 13, 2009 I changed my Facebook status to the say the following…

free

and I have recieved many more responses via direct Facebook mail, email and Twitter.  You might say I have always given free advice, to family, friends, acquaintances and perfect strangers, expecting no consideration in return.

I have done this for a few reasons:

  1. I love strategizing
  2. I love building things
  3. I am addicted to solving other people’s problems
  4. I love to hear about people’s ideas
  5. I like to see people succeed

So you can see that this stuff is fun for me. The real value (and the real fun) in what I do is not necessarily in the advice per se but in the expansion or customization of the initial advice into strategies and associated tactics, then the implementation and the application of the plan.  That is what I sell. Getting people from concept to completion – execution.

Obviously this would not work if I did not love what I do but you get the picture.

Think about it in terms of your business, are your competitors giving away things for free?  With that said do you have a FREE strategy?  What can you give away for free that will lead to building mutually beneficial long term relationships?

P.S.  If you are looking for advice or just someone to give you some ideas drop me a line – jarel@jarelcockburn.com , especially if you are starting / operating a non-profit, I stil have a few more FREE units in the back room somewhere.
