What Matt Damon Can Teach You About Sales

Warning: If you are at work or around the kids DO NOT play this clip, there is a ton of profanity.  Just wait until you get home or find yourself a pair of good headphones or even a closet at work.

This probably had to be one of my favorite episodes of Entourage (FYI, there are only a few shows I actually turn the TV on for – Family Guy, The Cleveland Show, Bill Maher and of course Entourage). When it comes to sales or deal strategy you can definitely take some notes from Matt Damon’s appearance on the show’s season finale.  Here are a few quick notes:

  1. Ask For What You Want & Give A Clear Call To Action
  2. Matt walks right up to Vince and does not waste any time asking for what he wants.  Later on in the clip Matt gives him clear directives on how to participate, “come with me to Cleveland” or “write a check”.

  3. Get Them On The Phone
  4. Vince is using every tactic to make sure that he does not talk to Matt because he knows he will ask him to donate to his foundation. Fight through those initial barriers to make sure that you are able to make the pitch…and close the deal.

  5. Push Hard
  6. Relentless in his approach and followup, Matt is going to stop at nothing until he closes the deal with Vince.

  7. Use Peer Pressure
  8. This was a classic moment. Matt gets Vince on the phone and solicits the help of Bono to close the deal. He appeals to Vince’s respect for Bono and they both pressure him to “do the right thing”.  Later in the clip he shows up with Lebron and Lebron’s presence alone has the same effect.

  9. Be Passionate
  10. From the very outset you can see that Matt is passionate about his cause – ONEXONE. Take some notes, if you are not as passionate about your product and or service you may not be that successful. Demonstrate that passion; be a fanatic….learn from Gary Vaynerchuk.

    Disclaimer:  I would say that you probably don’t want to yell at your prospects on the phone, stay professional….but you get the picture, I don’t have to tell you that, we’re all grownups here!
